A practical guide to reading a Malaysian unit trust fact sheet

Four numbers matter and two of them are usually on the second page.

The past-performance chart occupies the most space and tells you the least. Here is what to read instead.

The management expense ratio

Total annual cost as a percentage of assets. It compounds against you. A 1.8% MER against a 1.2% alternative is a third of your return over thirty years.

The sales charge

Deducted before a single ringgit is invested. A 5% charge means starting 5% behind.

Portfolio turnover

High turnover means trading costs you pay but do not see itemised.

The benchmark

Check what the fund compares itself to, and whether the comparison is honest.
